Registering a company in Albania: the steps that actually stall you

Incorporation in Albania is not the hard part. Founders are often told the company can be registered in a matter of days, discover that this is true, and then lose two months to everything that follows.

Registration is the fast step

Filing with the business registry is straightforward when the documents are right: founding act and statute, identification for the founders and administrator, and a registered address you can actually evidence. Where this goes wrong is usually a foreign shareholder’s documents — corporate extracts, powers of attorney and translations that need legalisation or apostille in the home country, obtained before anyone starts.

Begin that paperwork first. It has the longest lead time and it blocks everything else.

Run the next steps in parallel

The delay is almost always sequential thinking. These do not have to happen one after another:

  • Bank account opening. Expect compliance review, particularly with non-resident beneficial owners. Start immediately after registration and ask the bank for its document list up front.
  • Tax registration and fiscal setup, including your electronic invoicing arrangements before you issue a first invoice, not after.
  • Sector licensing or permits, which may come from a different authority entirely and on its own timetable.
  • Social insurance registration for employees, ahead of the first payroll rather than alongside it.

Before you sign a lease

Two practical cautions. Confirm the property’s ownership and registration status before committing to an address you are going to register — title issues are common enough to check every time. And decide who will hold the administrator role and with what authority, because changing it later means another filing and another round of bank documents.

None of this is difficult. It is simply longer than it looks, and the companies that open on schedule are the ones that started the slow items on day one.
